Well, here it is: the Ocean Chocobo Recipe. I must tell you something before you start.
It will take about 5 hours to breed a fast Ocean Chocobo. In addition to time, you will
also need a lot of gils (or the W-item Materia), and the Chocobo Lure Materia. And your
rewards are: prizes from the Chocobo Racing, the "Mime Materia", the
"Quadra Materia", the "HP/MP Exchange Materia", and the ultimate
summon magic, "Knights Of The Round". If you think it's worth the time and
energy, then let's start.
Once you get the Highwind (Cid's airship), you can go back to the Chocobo Farm and
start breeding Chocobos. First, you need to rent stables at the farm. If you have gils, I
suggest you rent all six stables. You will need at least four stables to breed an Ocean
Chocobo.
The following are the notes that Chole, at the Chocobo Farm, jots down for you every
time you get information from the Chocobo Sage. If you want a complete recipe from me, you
could skip the next section. And if you want to just get some hints
and try breeding the Ocean Chocobo yourself, then take a look at the advises from the
Chocobo Sage.
Chocobo Sage's advises
By
Chole (chole@chocobofarm)
The following notes were prepared by Chole, at the Chocobo Farm
- Other than regular Chocobo, there are "Mountain Chocobo" and "River
Chocobo".
- In order for the "Mountain Chocobo" and the "River Chocobo" to be
born, you feed the "Carob Nut" to a "Great Chocobo" or a "Good
Chocobo" and have it produce an egg. But we don't sell any "Carob Nut".
- A "Great Chocobo" and a "Good Chocobo" are found on an island
southeast of the Chocobo Sage's dwelling at Corel, and in the area west of Corel. The
"Carob Nut" can be found south of the Chocobo Sage's dwelling. Monsters carry
them. Let's see, is Bone Village just south of there?
- One surprise: if you get the "Mountain Chocobo" and the "River
Chocobo" to produce an egg, you'll get a Chocobo that can cross mountains and rivers.
I bet that the right nut for that is the "Carob Nut".
- Bigger surprise: there seems to be a Chocobo that can cross the ocean. If you could
cross the ocean, mountains, and rivers, there'd be no place you couldn't go.
- In order to get an "Ocean Chocobo" you will need to get a
"Mountain-and-river Chocobo" to mate with something else.
- If you mate a "Mountain-and-river Chocobo" with a "Wonderful
Chocobo", you'll get an "Ocean Chocobo". But to do that you can't use
ordinary Nut.
- The nut that produces "Ocean Chocobos" is the "Zeio Nut". This is
the first I've ever heard of it. I wonder where you get them?
- Zeio Nuts are found on a little island east of the Chocobo Sage. "Goblins"
have them. With this, you can produce an "Ocean Chocobo".
- According to my research, mountain, river, and ocean Chocobos are hard to produce. But
if you take the right care of the Chocobos, and increase their Class ranking by winning at
the races, it'll increase your chances of getting one.

- Getting all the ingredients
- First, you will need at least four stables at the Chocobo Farm. I suggest you rent all
six.
- Go to the island where Gold Saucer is located. Just south of the desert, you will see
some Chocobo footprints. Equip the Chocobo Lure Materia and walk near the footprints. When
you encounter enemies, sometimes there will be a Chocobo among the enemies. How frequent
you encounter Chocobos depends on the level of your Chocobo Lure Materia. To catch a
Chocobo during battles, you have to kill all the enemies without hitting the Chocobo. Send
the Chocobo back to the farm (by pressing the Cancel button) after catching one. Repeat
this until you catch four Chocobos (because the fence outside the farm can only hold four
Chocobos). Then go back to the Chocobo Farm and talk to Choco Billy. Select "Moving
Chocobos". If you see a "Good Chocobo" (gender does not matter), then move
it into the farm. Release the Chocobo otherwise. Choco Billy will tell you whether a
Chocobo is not recommendable, average, good, great or wonderful. If there is no "Good
Chocobo" among the four that you caught, go back to the island and try again until
you catch a "Good Chocobo".
- Follow the procedures above to catch a "Great Chocobo" on the island where
Mideel is located. Head west from Mideel and you will see the footprints. And make sure
the "Great Chocobo" is of opposite gender as the "Good Chocobo" that
you caught.
- Follow the procedures above to catch a "Wonderful Chocobo" (gender does not
matter) on the island where Icicle Inn is located. The footprints are west of the town.
- There is an enemy named Vlakorados (looks like a combination of a dragon and a kangaroo)
near Bone Village. It carries a nut called "Carob Nut". You can either fight
Vlakorados and sometimes it will leave behind the "Carob Nut" after battle, or
you can steal (using the Steal Materia) the nut from it. But be warned, Vlakorados has a
very high HP. You need a total of three "Carob Nuts".
- Go to the island located at the north east of the world map. The name of the island is
"Goblin Island". Obviously, the enemy you find on that island is Goblin. You
need to get one "Zeio Nut" from it.
- Raising Chocobos
- It is optional to feed the Chocobos that you have caught. But feeding them could
increase their speed (faster), intelligence (easier to control), and stamina (more
strength/energy). And better Chocobos have a higher chance of producing even better
Chocobos. So I would highly recommend you to feed your Chocobos. But this is not going to
be cheap. It takes about 60 Sylkis Greens to max out a Chocobo's attributes, and the green
is $5000 each! 60*$5000*3 is a total of $900000! This number does not even include the
food money for the future "Mountain Chocobo", "River Chocobo",
"Black Chocobo" and "Ocean Chocobo"! (But you can always spend only
$5000 to buy one Sylkis Greens and use the item-doubling trick with the W-Item Materia.
Refer back to my Secrets Page for more information.).
- It is also optional to raise the class rankings of your Chocobos. To raise the ranking
of a Chocobo, have it participate in the Chocobo Racing at the Gold Saucer. Every Chocobo
belongs to C class initially. And winning three races would take it to the next class,
namely B class. Then A class, and then the highest, S class. Chocobos that belong to
higher classes have a better probability of producing a desire Chocobo. And winning
the races would help you win more GP, items and Materias. But again, it's all up to you if
you want to spend the time or not.
- Breeding "Mountain (Green) Chocobos" and "River (Blue)
Chocobos"
- Now that you did all the preparation, let's breed some Chocobos. Save your game
before you proceed. Talk to Choco Billy and select "Breeding Chocobos". Then
select your "Good Chocobo" and "Great Chocobo" and give them a
"Carob Nut". You should get a "Mountain Chocobo" or a "River
Chocobo" (gender does not matter). Reset the game and retry if you fail. Since you
cannot have the Chocobos produce one right after another, this would be a great time to do
the optional things to your new born Chocobo. Again, save your game before you proceed.
When the "Good Chocobo" and the "Great Chocobo" are ready again, have
them produce another Chocobo. This time the new born should be of a different type and
gender as the first one. For example, if you get a male "Mountain Chocobo"
during the first time, this time you should try to get a female "River Chocobo".
If you don't succeed, reset the game and try again.
- There is a cave located south of Wutai. It could be reached with a "Mountain
Chocobo". Inside the cave you will find the "Mime Materia".
- There is another cave located east of Mideel. It could be reached with a "River
Chocobo". Inside the cave you will find the "Quadra Materia".
- After you have successfully obtained a "Mountain Chocobo" and a "River
Chocobo", you can release the "Good Chocobo" and the "Great
Chocobo".
- Breeding "Mountain And River (Black) Chocobos"
- Save your game before you proceed. Have your "Mountain Chocobo" and
"River Chocobo" produce a "Black Chocobo" using a "Carob
Nut". Make sure that the "Black Chocobo" is of different gender as your
"Wonderful Chocobo". Reset the game and retry if you fail. A "Black
Chocobo" is capable of crossing both mountains and rivers.
- There is a cave north of Corel. It could be reach with a "Black Chocobo".
Inside the cave you will find the "HP/MP Exchange Materia". (But why would I
want to have a character that has 999 HP and 9999MP!? He/She will be dead before casting
any magic!)
- Breeding "Ocean (Gold) Chocobos"
- Save your game before you proceed. When your "Black Chocobo" is
matured, have it produce an "Ocean Chocobo" (gender does not matter) with your
"Wonderful Chocobo" using the "Zeio Nut". Now ride your "Ocean
Chocobo" to the north east of the world map. There is a circular island (not shown on
the world map) there. You will find the "Knights Of The Round" Summon Materia
inside the cave.
- Breeding Faster Chocobos
- If you feed all your Chocobos before you breed them, you should end up with an
"Ocean Chocobo" around a speed of 160km/hour. To breed a faster Chocobo, you can
try breeding another "Ocean Chocobo" with a different gender than the first one.
And then have the two "Ocean Chocobos" produce a Chocobo. The new born should be
much faster than its parents.
- Although breeding Chocobos is fun (or maybe you find it boring), jsut don't forget
Sephiroth is still around, and the planet is still waiting to be saved!
