Summon Magic
Summon Magic has been an important part of Final Fantasy ever since its first
apperance in Final Fantasy III. When the magic is casted, it summons a creature to help you defeat your enemies during battles. Before you can summon the creature, usually you would have to defeat it first, another word, taking its spirit with you. |

Materia
Materia is a colored gem that stores energy in crystalline form. Materia can be slotted into holes on weapons and armors to draw out the hidden, untapped abilities of living things. There are five types of materia. Possessing the appropriate materia, any character can use magic and special abilities.

Materia crystals of this type enable the bearer to use summon spells. There is a
different crystal to summon each beast, such as Leviathan and Titan. See the section Summon Magic for more pictures. |
Magic Materia | |

Materia enables the use of three kinds of magic: attack, curative and support. Some materia improve with use. For example, a "Fire" materia will only allow the bearer to cast the first level fire spell at first. After repeated use, the "Fire" materia will level up and enable the user to cast higher level fire spells. Once leveled up, the "Fire" materia can be given to a different character without losing the acquired spells. Thus, magic depends entirely on materia and not the specific characters. |
Command Materia | |
![]() |
This type of materia gives the bearer a special ability that appears as a selectable command in the battle menu. Presumably abilities such as "Steal", "Enemy's Technique" and "Mime" all fall under this category. |
Independent Materia | |

This Materia alters parameters such as strength, magic defense, resistance towards magic of certain alignments, luck and so on. Other materias cause certain special actions to happen automatically such as the "Protect" materia that will make the character leap in front of attacks aimed at a mortally wounded friend to absorb damage in place of the intended victim. |
Support Materia | |
![]() |
Materia that is useful only for supporting another materia falls under this category. For example, the support materia "All" can be combined with the magic materia "Fire" to enable the user to use a fire spell on all the enemies. To use support materia, however, it is necessary that the holes for the host and support materia be linked by a small slit. (This feature is not always found in weapons and armors.) |
